Forgiveness Is A Process

Forgiveness is a process,” right? We hear this said all the time, and while I don’t’ disagree that forgiveness takes time, I can’t help but think when I hear this that yes, it’s a process, but it’s also a choice and the “process” doesn’t actually begin until we actually choose to forgive.

This is an active and intentional change that takes place in our heart, mind and soul. A deliberate decision that feels difficult and may not sit quite right with our anger toward the offense, but we must remember it sits right with our salvation.

Too many of us today are attempting to be in charge of changing others by withholding our forgiveness. The only change that takes place when we do that, is the one that connects us to Christ.  Let us all remember that when we are wronged, we must trust in the almighty God to bring about change in the offender. Our only mission is to live out a life filled with His grace, His mercy, His love and His compassion; and yes, this still remains our mission even when we are hurt.

Forgiveness is not an option, it is a command. Let us remember this scripture. “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:12-13
